Switch OBS Scenes with a MIDI Pedal, Pad, or Drum Trigger
Scene switching is one of the most useful things OBS can do. It is also one of the most disruptive things to control manually.
If you are recording or streaming from a desk, clicking between scenes may not feel like a big deal. But if you are teaching drums, playing an instrument, recording a hands-on tutorial, or running a solo production setup, reaching for the keyboard or mouse can break the flow immediately.
You may have one scene for talking, another for playing, another for an overhead camera, another for a close-up view, and another for lesson graphics or source overlays.
The creative need is simple:
Switch the view without stopping the content.
That is where MIDI control can help.
A MIDI pedal, pad, footswitch, or drum trigger can become a physical scene-switching control for OBS.

Why scene switching matters
OBS scenes are more than layout presets.
They are production moments.
A scene can define what the viewer sees, what sources are active, which camera angle is featured, what overlays are visible, and how polished the recording or stream feels.
For example, a drum instructor might use scenes like:
- Talking view
- Full kit view
- Overhead cymbal/snare view
- Foot camera view
- Lesson chart view
- Practice prompt view
- Before/after demonstration view
A streamer might use scenes like:
- Starting soon
- Main camera
- Screen share
- Close-up camera
- Break screen
- Ending screen
A musician might use scenes like:
- Performance view
- Pedalboard view
- DAW capture
- Lyrics or chart view
- Camera close-up
The challenge is not that OBS cannot switch scenes.
The challenge is switching scenes at the right moment without interrupting what you are doing.
The keyboard and mouse problem
Keyboard shortcuts can work well when your hands are already near the keyboard.
But many creators are not creating from that position.
Drummers are behind a kit. Guitarists may be standing. Instructors may be demonstrating something physical. Streamers may be managing multiple inputs while staying on camera.
The second you reach for the mouse or keyboard, several things happen:
- Your posture changes.
- Your timing changes.
- Your attention leaves the content.
- Your eyes move away from the camera or subject.
- The take feels interrupted.
- Editing later becomes more annoying.
For teaching and performance-based content, the break can be obvious.
The production control should support the content, not pull the creator out of it.
Using MIDI to switch OBS scenes
MIDI devices are naturally good at sending simple, intentional control signals.
A footswitch can send a MIDI event.
A drum trigger can send a MIDI event.
A pad can send a MIDI event.
A controller button can send a MIDI event.
The useful question is:
What should that MIDI event do?
For scene switching, a MIDI event could be mapped to:
- Switch to a specific OBS scene
- Toggle between two scenes
- Move from a talking view to a performance view
- Move from a performance view back to a teaching view
- Show a close-up camera angle
- Bring up a chart, overlay, or lesson display
That means the creator can stay in position while the production changes around them.
Scene pair toggling
One of the most practical workflows is scene pair toggling.
Instead of mapping several different triggers to several different scenes, you can map one trigger to move between two important scenes.
For example:
- Talking view ↔ Playing view
- Main camera ↔ Overhead camera
- Lesson explanation ↔ Demonstration
- Full kit ↔ Foot camera
- Clean view ↔ Overlay view
This is useful because many creator workflows are built around a simple back-and-forth rhythm.
Explain the idea.
Demonstrate the idea.
Return to explanation.
Demonstrate again.
A single MIDI footswitch or trigger can support that pattern without forcing the creator to remember several keyboard shortcuts.
Why workarounds can become fragile
Many creators first try to solve MIDI-to-OBS control through a chain of tools.
That might include MIDI utilities, virtual MIDI routing, hotkey translation, scripts, startup helpers, OBS hotkeys, and other background apps.
Those tools can be powerful.
But the more pieces involved, the more fragile the workflow can become.
One part has to detect the MIDI device. Another part has to route the event. Another part has to translate the event. Another part has to send the hotkey. OBS then has to receive the correct action.
If one piece fails, the scene does not switch.
That may be acceptable while experimenting.
It is not acceptable in the middle of a take.

Example workflow: multi-camera performance video
A musician records a performance with multiple camera angles.
One MIDI pad switches to the main performance scene. Another switches to a close-up view. A footswitch toggles between two commonly used scenes.
The result is a smoother recording process and less cleanup later.
Even if the final video is edited afterward, capturing cleaner scene changes during recording can save time and make the session feel more intentional.
Example workflow: solo streamer
A solo streamer uses a MIDI controller to switch between the main camera, screen capture, break screen, and ending screen.
Instead of relying only on keyboard shortcuts, the streamer can use physical controls that are easier to hit without hunting for the right key combination.
This can be especially useful when the creator already has MIDI gear in the setup.
Keep the setup focused
A good production workflow does not need to be complicated to be powerful.
If the goal is simply to switch scenes, the control path should be easy to understand and repeat.
